The New Rolwaling Sangag Choling Monastery Complex is Very Nearly Complete!
This wonderful, urgently needed project has finally been made possible following years of planning. The local community, who had a sincere wish to preserve their cultural and religious heritage, dared to dream they could build such a magnificent new monastery to replace the previous one which suffered damage from ongoing subsidence issues and the earthquake in 2015, but feared it wouldn't be possible.
The Rolwaling Sangag Choling Monastery committee headed by Ngawang Lapsam Rinpoche worked tirelessly along with the Everest Sumitters club to source the significant sponsorship needed to allow the work to go ahead. Following the earthquake, everything came together thanks to many kind sponsors and work could finally begin!
A dedicated expert team of workers supported by local villagers worked through an unusually heavy monsoon season to demolish the old monastery, building a new one the original site alongside an additional community kitchen/dining hall and prayer/protecter house.
The project has been a truly wonderful success. The team expertly preserved the sacred buddhist paintings which once graced the walls of the previous monastery, along with the woodwork of the previous altar and internal pillars which can now be found in the new building. Being able to preserve this history was the top priority of the team and makes the new building feel very special indeed.
Please enjoy the photos of the building process below and visit soon if you can to be a part of this new phase in history of Rolwaling Valley.
We would like to thank all those who's generosity helped with the planning, fundraising and completion stages of this amazing project. We couldn't have done it without you!
